An agent who holds an active resident major line, surety bail bond or title license may inactivate a license as long as the person does not engage in, participate in or assist with any activity for which an agent’s license is required. The person must be out of the insurance industry in relation to any duties or activities that would require an agent's license for at least 24 months after inactivation. The license must be in good standing with the superintendent and compliant with continuing education requirements in order to inactivate. The inactivation request must be received by the Department prior to the license expiration date. Any requests received after the license expiration date will be returned. Once a license has been inactivated, all appointments held by the agent will be cancelled as of the date the inactive status was granted.
License Reactivation: A person may request to return to active status by:
- Filing a reactivation request with the superintendent;
- Submitting proof of approved continuing education credits based on the license type being reactivated (or proof of completed pre-licensing education course for each line of authority) completed within the preceding six (6) months; and
- Paying any required fees.
An agent may surrender all or some their Ohio Insurance license(s). When a license(s) is surrendered, all appointments for that line of insurance are cancelled. The license must be in good standing with the superintendent in order to surrender. The surrender request must be received by the superintendent prior to the license expiration date. Any requests received after the license expiration date will be returned. Once a license has been surrendered, the pre-licensing and examination requirements must be completed in order to reinstate each surrendered line of insurance.
